Andrew Van Smith was a son of Asa Andrew Smith and Sceleta Abernathy. He was quiet, gentle, and exceptionally bright. He attended University of Arkansas where he studied law, was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, and met his future wife, Alice Carey Simonds, a founder of Chi Omega Fraternity. They were married November 6, 1898. They had a son, Harold Van Smith, July 31, 1899.

Andrew, Allie, and Harold moved to Washington DC. Allie had surgery for appendicitis and died October 15, 1900 due to complications. She is buried in the Congressional Cemetery in Washington DC with her sister, Helen May Simonds.

Andrew married second Ollie VanCleve Thomas in 1908. They had 3 known children: Andrew Thomas Smith, Mary Louise Smith, and Carolyn Smith.

While working in the Phillipines he contracted a tropical disease and fought it for the remainder of his life. Andrew died December 11, 1923 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He is buried in Banks, Arkansas.Son of A A and S C Smith
