James Coyle was born in Ireland to Patrick Coyle & Elizabeth "Bessie" Greenan. His actual birthdate is in question since several official records contradict one another.

An Irish immigrant, he arrived in the United States at Castle Garden, New York on 17 May 1880 aboard Royal Mail Ship "City of Richmond", a steamship of the Inman Lines. Presumably, he joined his brother Patrick who was already in the U.S. and working in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. They later removed to Taunton, Massachusetts and boarded together at 56 Court Street while working as laborers. Patrick became a successful baker in Taunton.

James was a provisions dealer in meats and vegetables operating 'James Coyle & Co.' for many years at 42 Washington Street in Taunton with his business partner, John Quigley. His shop was around the corner from his brother's bakery on Court St.

On September 24, 1891 when James was 30 years old, he married Mary Ann Corr, 19, the daughter of John Corr & Bridget Fallon. This was the first marriage for both and took place at St. Mary's Church in Taunton with the Rev. John W. Quirk presiding. His best man was John Quigley. James and Mary Ann established residence at 60 Washington Street.

In 1892, he joined the Massachusetts Catholic Order of Foresters, a group formed by Irish immigrants to provide insurance for its members. His daughter Catharine was the beneficiary of his insurance policy.

James became a widow when Mary Ann died in 1901 leaving him to raise their three children aged 7, 3 and 1 years.

The 1920 census shows him boarding at 52 Washington St. in the home of Frank and Agnes (Masterson) Hollihan. Agnes was his brother Patrick's adopted daughter.

James died in1925 of chronic fibroid phthisis at the Bristol County Tuberculosis Hospital in Attleboro, Massachusetts where he had resided for three years.
