Starling J. "Bud" Coppess, 84, a widely known and respected figure in Chino Valley law enforcement for decades, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2015, in Chino. He was born May 9, 1930, in Escondido and graduated from Escondido High School. He went to work for the California Fish and Game Department before joining the Air Force. After his military service, he rejoined the department and was employed at Los Serranos Game Farm operated by the Department of Fish and Game in Chino Hills. He was a Chino police officer for nine years before he was appointed by County Supervisor Ruben Ayala in September 1967 to complete an unexpired term as constable of the Chino Judicial District following the resignation of Fred Derbyshire. He was elected to a six-year term in February 1972. He retired July 2, 1982, as a lieutenant in the San Bernardino Marshal's Office assigned to the Chino Court. A display in the police museum at Chino Police Department presents a summary of Officer Coppess' career. He was a charter member of Chino Kiwanis Club as well as a past president of the club. He was active as a Chino High Booster Club member and in Chino Little League for many years. He was an active member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Chino, serving as an usher, as well an Eucharistic minister for several years. He raised guide dogs for many years. He is survived by his children, Michael Coppess and wife, Marcia, of Pasadena, Jeff Coppess and wife, Denise, of Chino, Julie McCann and husband Jim of Placentia, daughter-in-law Kristi Coppess of Humble, Texas; grandchildren, Colin Coppess, Lauren Coppess, Jordan Coppess, Brandi Schleuter, Wendi Gutmann, Matt McCann, Evan McCann, Bailey Coppess and Bryce Coppess; one great-grandchild, Cael Schleuter. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Carolyn, in February 2009, and son, Mark, in 2010. Rosary and viewing will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015, at Funeraria del Angel Pierce Brothers Griffith, Chino. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Chino. The family suggests memorial contributions to Guide Dogs of America, 13445 Glenoaks Blvd., Sylmar, CA 91342.
