Alfred attended Virginia Military Institute during the 1859-60 school year, where he apparently got into trouble for cardplaying. He worked as a drillmaster in Richmond for much of 1861. He enlisted as a Private in Company "I", 4th Virginia Cavalry, on 5 March 1862, and transferred to Company "B" on 1 March 1863.

He died of "Typhoid Fever", per Cemetery records, at Chimborazo Hospital. His grave in his father's plot was marked in November 2022 through the efforts of the "Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery" and of the Virginia Division, Children of the Confederacy.
