Nannie Elizabeth Wortham was born June 26, 1917, in Inez, NM to the home of Rosa (Bartlett) and Shannon A. Clark and died January 20, 2015, in Portales, NM.
She grew up in the Inez community, and attended the Rogers School. She was the Valedictorian of the class of 1936, but was not recognized as such at the time. She was only given that honor in recent years in a special ceremony held at the nursing home where she had resided for the past 17 years. After graduation, she continued to remain at home for several years, caring for her ailing mother, and continuing on after her mothers death to help her father, and care for other siblings. On Mar. 14, 1946, she was married to George Wortham. They continued to farm in the Inez community until 1958, when they moved to Portales. Mrs. Wortham was a devoted wife and mother, and was known for her huge Sunday dinners that were the gathering place for all of her family and often times a number of friends. She was a devout Christian, and a charter member of the Fellowship Baptist Church. At the time of her death she was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church. Mrs. Wortham was an avid reader, and enjoyed playing 42 and sewing. She was always intrigued by beauty pageants, and especially enjoyed watching the Miss America Pageant. A special thrill for her was the first time she was able to see it in color.
She is survived by six sons and four daughters-in-law, Warren and Rebecca Wortham of Portales, Newell and Pam Wortham of Portales, Charles and Kay Wortham of Magazine, AR, Wallace Wortham of Odessa, TX, Sawyer Wortham of Portales and Rowdy and LaWanda Wortham of Portales; her former son-in-law, Ray Cavett and his wife, Sharon of Clovis; 15 grandchildren, Tammy Mullenix, Mark Cavett, Glen Wortham, Fala Van Marter, Shawna Wortham, Robin Miller, Jason Wortham, Shannon Wortham, Jeremy Wortham, Jamie Wortham, Jeremy Wright, Misty Crowley, Echo Short, Kasha Shelvik and Moriah Wortham; 29 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Walter Cotton Clark of Portales; and numerous other family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Bert, Polk and Clarence Clark, a sister, Freda Rothamel, her only daughter, Rosemary (Mrs. Ray) Cavett, two great-grandsons, Neal Crowley and Shawn Gallegos, and by her beloved husband, George, who died in 1975.
