"A life is well lived, when you are well loved."Phillip Garland Carter, 78, a lifelong resident of Lynchburg, went to be with his Lord Wednesday, January 21, 2015. Born in Lynchburg, October 16, 1936, he was a son of the late George Marvin Carter and Theodosia Davis Carter Flint. He graduated from E.C. Glass High School and proudly served his country for four years in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a banker by profession for many years and many mergers. He began his career with People's National, which became First & Merchants, followed by Sovran, then Nations and finally retiring from Bank of America. He was also a longtime member of Randolph Memorial Baptist Church. Phillip was a kind and loving man. He loved his Lord, and his family and friends are comforted that his suffering has ended and now he is in the presence of his Savior, Jesus Christ.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, George M. "Pete" Carter, Jr., James H. Carter and Ronald L. Carter.Phillip leaves behind his loving wife of 53 years, Shirley Simpson Carter; his only child, Pamela "Pam" Carter; one brother, Ralph G. Carter; sister-in-law, Frances A. Simpson; and a special nephew, Mike Carter. A service celebrating his life will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, January 25, 2015, at Randolph Memorial Baptist Church with Pastor Derik Hamby officiating.The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2015, at Fort Hill Memorial Park.The family requests, in lieu of flowers, please consider Randolph Memorial Baptist Church, 4246 S. Amherst Hwy., Madison Heights, VA 24572 or The Helping Hands Ministry in Amherst County, 329 Main St. Madison Heights, VA 24572.
