Mr. Everette Eugene "Gene" Hickox, 85, died Thursday night (January 22, 2015) at Mayo Clinic Health Systems of Waycross after an extended illness.

He is a native and lifelong resident of Brantley County. He served in the U. S. Army. After 34 years of service, he retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation as an engineer. He was a member and deacon of Mars Hill Primitive Baptist Church.

He is the son of the late Everette Lloyd Hickox and Alma Douglas Hickox. He is preceded in death by one brother, Charles Hickox; one sister-in-law, Vernell Lee and her husband Eugene of Waycross; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Loyd and Susie Gunter.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes G. Hickox of Waycross; one son, Michael E. Hickox (wife Amy) of Waycross; one daughter, Rebecca "Becky" Taylor (husband Carlos) of Waycross; former daughter-in-law, Peggy Gibson (husband Steve); four grandchildren, Emma Claborn (husband Casey), Austin Taylor, Ashton Taylor and Lilly Pells Hickox; expecting one great grandchild, Joshua Gabriel Claborn; three sisters, Carolyn Gunter (husband H. L.) of Waycross, Judy Farr of Waycross, and Linda Stipes (husband Dan) of Waycross; two brothers, Bobby Hickox (wife Sina) of Hoboken, and Gary Hickox of La Veta, CO; two sister-in-laws, Yevonne Petty (husband Harold) of Marietta, and Teresa Taylor (husband Calvin) of Waycross; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday (January 25, 2015) at the Music Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Mars Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday at Music Funeral Home. The current, former and retired employees of Georgia Department of Transportation are asked to meet 2:40 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home to serve as honorary pallbearers.
