Mary Ann Bates was the third of the six children of Josiah Bate (Bates) Sr, & Elizabeth (Weeks) Bate. She was first married to Gilbert Pierce, Jr. on Oct. 2, 1834 near So. Chrleston, Clark Co, OH. They had 7 children:

By the 1860 census of S. Charleston, Clark Co, OH (pg 616, dwelling 331, family 341) Mary A Pierce was a Farmer's widow. Several years after Gilbert's death, Mary Ann married the minister, Peter Stout. After Peter's death "Grandma Stout" moved to Osceola, Iowa to be near her children and families.
