John Jackson Baxter was the son of James Oliver Baxter and Sarah Ann Futch. He married Ruth E. Pynes (daughter of white Pynes and Sarah Gilmore Lewis) December 29, 1857 in the White Pynes home in Henry Co., AL. They were parents of Oscar, Mary, Zebulon, Norma, James O., John W. and Frances Baxter. John was a farmer and Rutha E. a hard working farmers wife. John enlisted in the SIXTH FLORIDA INFANTRY, COMPANY D (Jackson county Volunteers)CSA 5/2/1862 at the Apalachicola Arsenal. He was captured 9/8/1862 in Kentucky and exchanged 9/16/1862 then furloughed 10/1/62. He returned soon after and was paroled at Greensboro NC 5/1/1865. Records show the family had 9 children of which 7 were living in the 1900 U.S. census. John and Rutha are at rest in Friendship Cemetery
