Rutha E. Pynes was the daughter of White Pynes and Sarah Gilmore Lewis Pynes. She was named for her grandmother Rutha Knotts Pynes wife of Daniel Pynes (First Citizen of Gordon, Al.) She was one of seven children. Two of her brothers, Hamilton and Lewis Pynes were killed in the Civil War. Rutha married John Jackson Baxter December 29, 1857. John enlisted in the CSA. This was a difficult time for the women left at home to manage the farms and raise the children. Often the family food supplies were confiscated for use by the troops. Rutha did not handle this arbitraty action in a passive manner and was quite outspoken. She was the mother of 9 children of which 7 were living in the 1900 U.S. Census. Her children: Oscar W.(m.Amanda E.McNeal), Mary Lou Ellen (m. William J.McNeal),Zebulon M.C.(m. Elizabeth Goldon), Norma Barto (m.Alexander Clinton Stephens), James O.(m.Trudy Johnson),Francis Frank (m. Mollie Feat), John Wesley (m. Anna Walding),She was a hard working Southern wife who suffered greatly as a result of the war. She and husband John Jackson Baxter are at rest in Friendship Cemetery. Rutha's parents are buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Harmon Community near Gordon, AL
