John Lewis Bates (1859-1946) — also known as John L. Bates of Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts; Newton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.

Born in North Easton, Easton, Bristol County, Massachusetts., September 18, 1859. Son of Reverend Lewis Benton Bates, D.D. and Mrs.Louisa D. (Field) Bates;He attended public school in New Bedford, Chelsea, Taunton, and eventually the Boston Latin School. He then attended the Methodist-affiliated Boston University, earning an A.B. in 1882, and went on to graduate from Boston University School of Law in 1885. Over the next decade Bates practiced law in Boston.


He married, July 12, 1887, to Miss Clara Elizabeth Smith in Jamestown, New York.

Republican. Lawyer; member of Massachusetts state house of representatives, 1894-99; Speaker of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, 1897-99; Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts, 1900-03; Governor of Massachusetts, 1903-05; defeated, 1904; delegate to Massachusetts state constitutional convention Bates was president of the Massachusetts Constitutional Convention, which enacted a significant number of changes to the state constitution, 1917-19. Methodist. Member, American Bar Association; A 32nd Degree Mason, Shriner, Freemasons of the Baalbec Lodge; Odd Fellows at Zenith Lodge; United Order of the Pilgrims President in 1892, 1893, and 1894, the , Beta Theta Pi. Died June 8, 1946.
