PROFESSOR G.W. LYON DEAD
Well-Known Music Composer and Confederate Veteran Died Last Night
Professor George W. Lyon, a well known musician, composer of music and confederate veteran, died last night at 10:15 o'clock at his residence, corner of Bush and Davis Streets, after an illness of a week and a half of hemorrhage of the brain.
Professor Lyon was a noted man in many respects. In his profession, he ranked at the head and was a recognized authority on the composition of songs, and also of poetry. He is the author of fifteen or twenty sacred song books and nearly all of the new song books contain some of his works. He had just published one of his best works for 1903, a book called "The New Song Waves", which is pronounced the best by music men all over the country, and of which there has been a tremendous sale. Professor Lyon was 65 years of age, and bears the distinction of being the first southern man to compose and publish a song book and possibly taught more scholars than any other music teacher in the south, he having been teaching about forty-eight years.
During the Civil War, he was bandmaster of the Forty-second Georgia Regiment and wrote music for the band.
Professor Lyon is survived by his wife and eight children, the latter being A. A. (Alexis Amedus) Lyon, G. W. (George Washington)Lyon, Jr., W. W. Lyon of Atlanta; Mrs. Electa Lyon/Casey, wife of Captain J. T. Casey, of Oakdale, Georgia, Mrs. Dora Lyon/Casey, wife of Captain Jack Casey, of Oakdale, Mrs. Ida Lyon/McDonald, wife of Dr. McDonald; Mrs. Bertie Lyon/Sigman, of Hamilton, North Carolina and Miss Bessie Lyon, of Atlanta; also by his mother, three brothers and two sisters, William Lyon, of Atlanta, J. A. Lyon, of Tallapoosa; James A. Lyon, Mrs. E. F. Mize and Mrs. Dr. Cole. The three latter and his mother reside in Guthrie, Oklahoma. The funeral arrangements have not been announced.
