Hollywood Cemetery, in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia, was established October 14, 1890, after 84 acres were purchased by charter members for $25,000. At that time, it was outside the city limits. Within a few years, the company was in danger of insolvency, after having sold 2,000 lots (more than 1,000 burials had taken place). In the early years of the twentieth century, the City of Atlanta considered purchasing the cemetery to make it a municipal cemetery, but never finalized the purchase. The cemetery is currently owned and partially maintained by the owners of Lincoln Cemetery, who also owns the adjacent Magnolia Cemetery and Monte Vista Biblical Gardens Cemetery. Most of Hollywood Cemetery is a non-perpetual care property, which means that it is not maintained. It is overgrown with trees, vines, shrubs and other vegetation. There are full-sized trees growing from graves; gravestones uprooted, toppled and/or vandalized; erosion undermining graves and markers; and many flat gravestones completely covered by years of soil and debris. Of the more than 8,500 graves, as many as 2,500 are currently unmarked.
