S.C. Kerley recollects: "She, in stature, was extremely small, and was known and is still called by the very few that are still living who knew her "Little Mary". There is still an old proverb extant that "Little Mary" devoted more of her time in her little cozy closet communing with her Maker than perhaps anyone that ever lived in the county.
"While on her death bed, she made her friends promise that instead of marking her grave with a costly monument, she wanted them to take the money they invested for this purpose and give it to the poor and destitue. I am satisfied, knowing the family as I did, that this request was carried out to the letter."
