James Vander Gaast

Funeral services in memory of James Vander Gaast were held Monday, June 24, 1996 at the United Methodist Church in Everly. Rev. Keith Pals officiated.

Casket bearers were Nadia Vander Gaast, Pamela Vander Gaast, Yvette Vander Gaast, Robert Vander Gaast, Michael Vander Gaast, Melinda Vander Gaast, John Vander Gaast, Randal Vander Gaast, Mariella Thorp, Mary Massey, Cathy Weis, Kevin Arms, Barbara Arms, Mark Fick, and Regina Girard. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery of Hartley. Warner Funeral Home of Spencer was in charge of the arrangements.

James Vander Gaast, the son of Hendrik and Jantje Vanderberg Vander Gaast, was born January 30, 1908, in the Netherlands. It was there that he spent his childhood years and received his early education.

James married Jennie Veldkamp on April 13, 1932, in the Netherlands. They came to America in 1948, first settling in Harris, Iowa. In 1951, they moved to the Everly area, where James began farming. After retiring from farming in 1972, James and Jennie moved into Everly. In 1994, he moved to the Wellness Center in Hartley.

James was a member of the United Methodist Church in Everly, and had been active in Senior Citizens.

Mr. Vander Gaast passed away at the Spencer Municipal Hospital on June 20, 1996, at the age of 88. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jenny; one sister, Anna Hellinga, and one brother, Jacob.

James is survived by two sons, Henry of Ames, and Bill and his wife, Terri, and children, of Everly; two daughters, Bernadine and her husband, Michael Amosson of Soldier, Iowa, and Jeanette and husband, Ron Arms of Camanche, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

Everly, Iowa. James Vandergaast, 88, of Everly died Thursday at the Spencer (Iowa) Municipal Hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Everly, with burial in Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley, Iowa. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.
