Arlena is a daughter of James Gilbert and Rhoda Emeline Stewart. She is the third of ten children born to them. James, from Tennessee, and Rhoda, from Alabama, married in Tennessee. They lived in St. Joseph, Tennessee until 1891. Their first seven children were born there. In 1891 they moved to Utah and settled in Joseph, Sevier County, Utah in order to fully embrace their new church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. There Arlene grew to womanhood.
On April 2, 1901 Arlene married George Newton Brown. The couple moved to Idaho living first in Teton and then in Chester. They became parents to seven children: Rhoda Arlena, Julia Charlottie, George Deloy, James Edward, Walter Stewart, Elverda, and Leo Chester.
Arlena struggled with each pregnancy and with each year that went by until she died of diabetes.
