John Dankovchik was born in South Plainfield, New Jersey in 1898 to his parents George Dankovchik and Mary Smoliga, immigrants from Czechoslovakia. He married Mary Vasil on February 8, 1920 in Passaic, New Jersey and had two children Ernest and Audrey. John had his own grocery and meat business in 1930 and later worked as a foreman in construction. On a Saturday afternoon in July of 1937 he died of a heart attack while washing his car at his home on Rosalie Ave in Clifton, New Jersey. He was only 39. His wife and two children later shortened their surname to Danko in 1944.
