MILITARY: John D & Jefferson Dunbar both joined the CSA in or near Hamburg - Co K, 9th AR Inf.
16 May 1863 - Both captured & taken prisoner at the Battle of Champion Hill, near Edwards, MS. Both sent to Fort Delaware as POW's.
Sep 1863 - Transferred from Ft Delaware to Point Lookout, MD
Oct 1863 - John D. Dunbar DIED at Point Lookout, MD of chronic diarrhea & is bur in the mass grave there.
Note: It is only a list of 3,384 names that the Union officers left us as having died at Point Lookout. From prisoners' letter and diaries, we have learned that over 14,000 died while in this POW Camp.
