Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. A native of Indiana, he served as Captain and commander of Company A, 51st Indiana Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. He was awarded his Medal of Honor for his bravery in action at the Battle of Stones River, Tennessee on December 29, 1862. His citation reads "Was the first man to cross Stone River and, in the face of a galling fire from the concealed skirmishers of the enemy, led his men up the hillside, driving the opposing skirmishers before them." He was one of two 51st Indiana officers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery during the Civil War, the other being Captain Marion T. Anderson of Company D.
