John Miller Abney Sr., a retired bus driver, died Thursday at Slidell Memorial Hospital. He was 79. Mr. Abney was a lifelong resident of Slidell. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Slidell. He graduated from Slidell High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a former bus driver with the St. Tammany Parish school system and proprietor of Abney's Furniture Store. He was a member and past Master of Slidell Lodge No. 311 F. & A.M., Pontchartrain Chapter No. 68, Royal Arch Masons and Slidell Council No. 48. Survivors include his wife, Jo Ellen Harding Abney; a son, John M. Abney Jr. of Houston; a daughter, Cheryl Abney Shepherd; three sisters, Annie A. Rogers, Dorothy A. Tanner and Noelie A. Vivian of Purvis, Miss.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Honaker Funeral Home, 1751 Gause Blvd. West, Slidell. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
