Peter Thorn emigrated from Germany to the United States. On February 9, 1856, Mr. Thorn was hired to caretake Evergreen Cemetery in Gettysburg, PA. Peter, his wife Elizabeth and family occupied the gatehouse at the cemetery. In August of 1862, Peter enlisted with the 138th Pennsylvania Infantry. He served for three years, leaving the cemetery duties to his wife and family. Peter was discharged from his military duties in June of 1865. He resumed his duties at Evergreen Cemetery until 1874. He rests besides his wife in a plot in Evergreen Cemetery, the same cemetery that he & his wife caretaked for over 19 years.
