Walter Heatherly, 83 of Springfield, passed away Aug. 29, 2003, from heart disease. Walter was born September 1, 1920, in Carthage, MO.
He married Shirley Allan on February 20, 1943.
He served as a proud member of the 326th Engineers 101st Airborne Division in WW II as a paratrooper. Battles included the liberation of Holland and the siege of Bastogne, and he received a purple heart for wounds sustained in battle. He coordinated several reunions of his battalion. He was a member of the local VFW and DAV. Walt owned and operated a wallpaper business for many years and served as president of the local painters and decorators union. He was also a member of the Elks Club.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Charlotte Jones; a half-brother; and a half-sister.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley; six children, Lorna Beard, AR; Colin and Jean Heatherly NV; Sheila Hanke, TX; Allan and Lydia Heatherly, RI; Kevin and Lisa Heatherly, MO; and Heather and Jim Ray, MO; six grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; one sister, Irene Day, OR; one half-sister, Margie Beckham, KS; and four nieces.
Visitation will be at Gorman-Scharf Funeral Home on Sept. 19 prior to services. Graveside services with military honors will be held at the Missouri Veteran's Cemetery, Sept. 19.
