BRISTOL, Va. Marian M. "Mossie" Bailey, age 82 and formerly of Glade Spring, VA, passed away Tuesday, January 6, 2015, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Most recently a resident of Grand Court in Bristol, VA, she was a long time resident of Glade Spring, VA. A lifelong Methodist, Mossie belonged to Byars-Cobbs United Methodist Church where she held many offices, taught Sunday School, and was a member of The United Methodist Women, where she held offices in the Church Unit, and the Abingdon District. Mossie was very active in community organizations. She was a member of the Black's Fort DAR, the Washington County Historical Society, the Family, Community & Education Club (FCE), the Glade Spring Library Board, Project Glade, and the Glade Spring Book Lovers Club. Along with a group of retired teachers, they formed the Hands on Helpers for needs of children in the Glade Spring/Meadowview area, and she was a tireless volunteer at the Glade Spring Food Bank. She was the nurse for Dr. J.T. Goodman during his years of practice in Glade Spring, VA in the 1950's and 1960's. After his move she enrolled in Emory & Henry College where she graduated Cum laude and was a member of the Sigma Mu Honors Society. She received a Master's of Education Degree from the University of Virginia. Mossie taught in the Washington County School System for almost 30 years at Hayter's Gap Elementary, Liberty Hall Elementary, Glade Spring Elementary, and Glade Spring Middle School. She is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.L. Moss; first husband, C.R. "Dick" Goff; second husband, Archie Bailey; and one sister, Ilona Moss Wooten. She is survived by her daughter, Victoria "Vickie" Goff Mitoraj and husband Dr. Thomas E. Mitoraj of Bristol, VA; three grandchildren, Brandon Monk and wife Ashley of Roanoke, VA, Maggie Monk Holden and husband Andrew of Bristol, VA, and Hannah Monk and Kevin Timmons of Bristol, VA; four great-grandchildren, Mason Monk, Noah Ellison, Amelia Holden, and Samantha Monk; and several nieces and nephews. Along with her many friends in Glade Spring, she is also survived by her recent friends and staff of Grand Court Assisted Living in Bristol, VA, and two special longtime friends, Rachel Nutter of Glade Spring, VA and Anne Surber of Manassas, VA. Visitation with the family will be held from 12 until 2 p.m., Saturday, January 10, 2015, at Byars-Cobbs United Methodist Church in Glade Spring, VA. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Paul T. Griffith and the Rev. Todd Adams officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Rose Cemetery with Jerry Ferguson, Andrew Holden, Kevin Timmons, Richard Kerley, Jeremy Honaker, and Kevin Surber serving as pallbearers.
