Edward Leonard Berens was born November 7, 1936, to Henry and Rena (Datterl) Berens in rural Dunlap, Iowa. He attended country school and then entered the United States Marines. Ed married Meridel Janice Myers on January 12, 1962 at the First Christian Church in Onawa, Iowa. The couple made their home in Dunlap. Ed worked at Benjamin's Gas Station and as a farm hand for Dave Rannells. He then worked at IBP in Denison for 32 years. After his retirement from IBP, Ed worked for various area farmers and also at the Dunlap Livestock Auction.
Ed was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and the Dunlap American Legion. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He loved going for coffee every day to catch up on the latest news.
Ed died on Sunday, January 4, 2015, at his home in Dunlap at the age of 78 years, one month and 28 days.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Meridel Berens; parents-in-law, Howard and Marie (Linnscott) Myers; sister-in-law Colleen Myers; and two brothers, Howard and Joseph Berens. He is survived by his three children, Jon (Kim) Berens, Brad Berens, Jackie Barry; two grandchildren, Corey Berens and Rose Berens; six step grandchildren; seven step great grand-children; brother, John (Jack) and wife Darleen; two sisters, Pauline and husband Don Schmitz and Helen and husband Roger Houston; sister-in-law, Sue Berens.
