Laura was born December 31, 1871 in Indiana to William and (Baise) Ellis. Her highest level of formal education was the 8th grade, which was a big achievement in those days, with a written examination that would challenge some modern-day high school seniors.

Sadly, both her parents passed away by 1878.

The 1885 Iowa State Census shows that Laura Ellis, 13, and Catharine Ellis, 11 were living with a William and Sarah Jones and their son, Harvey. The 1885 State Census lists:
William Jones, 64, head
Sarah Jones, 53, wife
Laura Ellis, 13, b. IND
Catharine Ellis 11, b. IND

On March 4, 1896, she married a farmer, Mark E. Stewart, in Missouri Valley, Iowa. It was a first marriage for both of them--she was 25 and he 26.

However, there was another sadness. From 1935 to at least 1940, Laura M. Stewart lived at 101 South West, Missouri Valley, Iowa. The 1940 US Census indicates that she was living alone, and 68 years old. She was still married, but her husband was no longer with her.
