Mary Elizabeth was born in Morgan Co. IL, the daughter of John K. & Sarah Steele Kennedy. Sarah died in 1844, when Mary was only 2 years old. In 1849 the family moved to Wapello Co., Iowa and then in 1856 to Mahaska Co., Iowa. Mary Elizabeth came west over the Oregon Trail with her father and family in 1862 as a member of "The Kennedy Company Wagon Train of 1862" of which her father was the Captain. Only those that made this trip really knew of the rigors they encountered but a lighter note of the journey is told in the journal of J.S. Mclung on pg. C-5. He says, "We passed by two Indian villages. I visited them in company with some young ladies. In passing the door of one of huts, the old chief came out and seeing a beautiful intelligent girl by the name of Miss Kennedy, he was determined on having hur. But she claimed she was mine and could not stay. He then tried in every position to trade me poneys & other property for hur, but it was not a very good day for traiding and he did not succeed."

The journey was completed in October of 1862 in Baker City, OR. Mary Elizabeth met Alanson Allison in LaGrande and they were married 25 Dec. 1862 in Grande Ronde, Baker, OR. They moved to Walla Walla in 1864 where her father John Kennedy had settled. In 1866, Alanson and Mary Elizabeth went to Lewis Co. to visit Mary's best friend and they fell in love with the area. They returned to Walla Walla, sold their farm and by 1867 had taken out a homestead on Cowlitz Prairie where they farmed and raised their family of 9 children. Mary died June 5, 1895.
