Obituary: Elliott Tyler.
The death of Elliott Tyler of Worcester, Mass., comes as a surprise to his friends in this vicinity. Doorman Elliott Tyler, station 2, the oldest member of the Worcester police force in number of years, and second oldest in point of service, died at his home early on the morning of November 16, of heart disease and chromic stomach trouble. He had been ailing since early in the spring but kept steadily at work until about six weeks ago. A three months leave of absence had been granted jim. He was confined to his bed less than a week. For ten and a half years Mr. Tyler patrolled a night route without being absent from duty a single night, a record in which he took much pride. Having reached an advanced age he was made doorman of station 2 in 1892.
Mr Tyler was born in Whitingham, January 17, 1828, and was the brother of Samuel Tyler, for several years a well know resident of Jacksonville. As a boy he worked on a farm, and later married Miss Martha A Bliss, also of this town. He made his home in Heath, and Shelburne Falls, Mass. From the latter place he drove astage to Greenfield for three years, going to Worcester January 1, 1866, to act a superintendent of the farm of Dr. Benjamin F. Heyward, Heyward street. At the end of three years he went to work for White, Houghton & Peary, now the firm of White, Peary & Dexter. Preferring the open air to life indoors, Mr. Tyler sought an appointment of the Worcester police force in 1873. He was a member of Morning Star lodge, A. F. & A. M., and a member of the Worcester branch of the Massachessetts police relief association. Mr. Tyler is survived by a son, Wilson Tyler, and a daughter Laura A. Tyler. The funeral was from the home, 386 Chandler street, November 18, at 11o'clock, Rev. Dr. Vincent E. Tomlinson conducting the service.
