Explaination of the confusion of the spelling of the Krüger name over the years and a quick lesson in German.
The Name Krüger, has been changed many times due Americans not understanding what an Umout was and how it functioned in the German Language. In the case of the census where the transcriber mistook the dots over the U as a dot of the letter they listed them as Kreiger. This too should read Krüger. Some Families just dropped the Umlout and in this case, would be Kruger.
The Umlout is a hold over from old German where they wrote the letter 'e', what we would consider sideways, over the vowel it followed. Over the centuries it changed to two dots. I have listed below the translations of the various Umlouts in the German language.
German Umlout = English translation
ü = ue
ö = oe
ä = ae
Related names:
Krüger become Krueger in English
My wife's family dropped the "e" altogether and now spell it Kruger.
Kreiger is a misspelling that many families used
============
NOTE: The other unusual letter that has been misunderstood in America from Germany is the "Es-Zet" letter. This was just the letters S and Z written very close together. Unfortunately, the old German "s" looked just the American letter "f". Over the centuries this letter has been translated as an "h", "ss", "B", "fz" and finally the correct "sz"
ß = sz
