103 YEARS

Early Life: Alex was born October 24, 1911, to Nephi James and Jessie Robertson Wadley in Pleasant Grove, Utah, in the same house that remained his home all his life. He was a farm boy and much of the work of the family farm fell to him and his older brother, Bryce, after their father died when Alex was three. He excelled in school and was told he could have been class valedictorian had he not had to forego extracurricular activities in favor of milking the cows.
Life's Work/Service/Interests: His college time at Brigham Young University ended just short of graduation when he had to go back to work, but his drafting, surveying, and engineering training stood him in good stead as he worked for the Bureau of Reclamation (on the original Deer Creek Dam), at the BYU Physical Plant, and in civil engineering for the Utah Department of Transportation. He worked double jobs his whole life, because he was also a full-time farmer. He married Nelda Beckstrand, of Meadow, Utah, on January 5, 1944, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, and he will be laid to rest on what would have been their 71st wedding anniversary. Alex loved his home and working the farm. He was well known for the cherries, peaches, apricots and pears that came from his trees. He often sang to the cows as he milked them and squirted milk into the mouths of the barn cats (and children) who came by at milking time. He was a generous friend and neighbor, and could be seen well into his nineties clearing snow out of driveways in winter and plowing garden spots in spring. He cared in all ways for his wife and children, giving them a safe and happy home with enough and enough to spare for education and extra help in times of need. He served faithfully in many positions in the LDS Church and often bore testimony of the truthfulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Alex was an unassuming, kind, honest, gentle, good man. Alexander "Alex" Wadley died January 1, 2015.
