Allen served as a special agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for 28 years, following in his father's footsteps. After a brief assignment in El Paso, Texas, he served in the Washington Field Office from 1974 through 1986, when he joined the Knoxville FBI office where he served as Prinicpal Legal Advisor/Chief Division Counsel and Fire Arms Instructor. Known for his brilliant legal mind, Allen's counsel and meticulous attention to detail in drafting affadavits and warrants was integral to innumerable successful federal prosecutions. He also excelled in legal and firearms instruction of agents and other law enforcement professionals. He retired from the FBI in 2002, and continues to be held in the highest esteem by his colleagues.
Allen was born in Tupelo, Mississippi on September 4, 1945, graduated from Tupelo High School, and earned a B.A. in History from Birmingham-Southern College. During the summers of 1967, 1968, and 1969, he served as a Park Ranger on the Natchez Trace.
He completed his J.D. in 1973 at the University of Mississippi School of Law and was admitted to the Mississippi Bar. He interrupted his legal studies in 1969 when he voluntarily enlisted in the United States Army, completing the Infantry Officer Candidate Course at Fort Benning, Georgia and achieving the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He served in Korea and received the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious performance of duty.
An avid hunter and fisher, Allen will be remembered for his rich storytelling, sharp wit, integrity, service to his country, and love of his family, his dog, and the outdoors.
He was preceded in death by his father, Sam Allen, Jr.; grandfather, Sam Harrison Allen and grandmother Ora Allen; grandfather, Howard Earl Walker and grandmother Frances Walker; stepfather, Johnnie Arnold; stepbrother, Robin Arnold; aunt, Martha Frances Allen and uncles Bill Allen, Paul Walker, Charles Walker, Mac Walker.
Mr. Allen is survived by his wife, Carol Bryson Allen of Knoxville, Tennessee; daughters, Melissa (Brad) Foster of Knoxville, Tennessee, Jennifer (Tim) Kuhn of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Becky (Matt) Jones of Kalamazoo, Michigan; grandchildren, Abby, Emma, and Brice Kuhn, Kelsey and Trula Foster, and Amelia Jones; his mother, Annie Laurie Arnold of Baldwyn, Mississippi; sister, Carol Elizabeth Allen of Mooreville, Mississippi, and stepsister Mary Nell (Jim) Garner of Raleigh, North Carolina and many more nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be from 5 pm to 7 pm on Sunday, January 4, 2015 at Click Funeral Home Middlebrook Chapel, 9020 Middlebrook Pike, Knoxville, TN 37923. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 5th at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 633 Saint John Court, Knoxville, TN 37934 with a reception to follow at the church.
Graveside Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at the East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 2200 E. Gov. John Sevier Hwy 168, Knoxville, TN 37920.
