Samuel Chatburn Brown, MD, was the son of James William Brown (d. 1866) and Mary Chatburn (d. 1888), both of whom died in Charleston, SC, and are purportedly buried in that city's Magnolia Cemetery. He was a graduate of the Medical College of South Carolina. He married Virginia Ellen Dozier in December 1863, and they moved from South Carolina to California in the late 1860s. They had no children.
