CIACCIO, NICHOLAS Professor Emeritus (1971); tenure B.A. 1965, Creighton University; M.A. 1966, Washington University, St. Louis; Ph.D. 1969, Pennsylvania State University.

Dr. Nicholas Ciaccio was a developmental and child clinical psychologist who was concerned with child psychology in Cairo. He was a charismatic leader of the American University in Cairo's Psychology Department programs for over 30 years and he undoubtedly left a mark in the hearts of all the students and faculty that knew him that will remain strong long after his death.

Dr. Ciaccio joined AUC in 1971. He was instrumental in pursuing the accreditation of Psychology as an undergraduate major by the Egyptian Government which was granted in 1976. He was chairperson of the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology and Egyptology (SAPE) three times. In 1990, he founded AUC’s Student Counseling Center. At the new campus, the "Ciaccio Psychology Lab" was named in his memory.

He founded the Child Development Center near Imbaba in 1974 which he directed until he retired over 30 years later. According to the AUC tribute, “He regularly consulted on matters of child and family therapy at children’s hospitals and institutions throughout the Cairo area. He worked to establish community and mental health programs in Cairo’s poorest quarters.”
