Born into a Christian family in east central Illinois, Doit converted to Judaism.

From the Program Book of the 8th Annual Northern Virginia Dinner on behalf of The Jewish Theological Seminary, Sunday, April 9, 2000, during which Doit was honored:

"A native of the rural town of Marshall, IL, Doit Shotts attended small country schools and high school. Declining a scholarship to the University of Illinois, Doit enlisted in the US Navy in 1948, where he served with distinction for over thirty years. Doit's naval career included ship, shore, and overseas stations including Key West, the Great Lakes, San Diego, Midway Island, London, Norfolk, and Washington, DC. During his service in London, Doit met and married his wife, Marion. Upon his retirement from the Navy, Doit was award the Navy Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service in keeping with the highest traditions of the US Naval Service.

While serving his country, Doit was able to integrated his broad range of communal, civic and religious volunteer activities with his naval service. In San Diego and Norfolk, he was very active in his synagogue and the local Jewish day school, and also served as the Jewish lay leader in San Diego for Navy and Marine Corps recruits. In the DC area, Doit volunteered at Ft. Belvoir as the principal of their Jewish religious school."

Following his retirement, Doit's involvement with Agudas Achim Congregation expanded. He has served as a member of their Board of Directors, as Secretary and Administrative and Financial Vice President, and is currently a member of the synagogue's 2000 committee. In addition, Doit was highlighted in Catherine Hall Myrowitz's inspiring book, "Finding a House for the Soul - Interviews with Converts to Judaism".

A founding member of the Northern Virginia Friends of JTS, Doit served for six years as col-chair and is the current Cabinet chairman. Doit Shott's passion for the Jewish Theological Seminary stems from his many visits to JTS which have imbued him with an ever deepening commitment to making the Seminary a continuing focus of the Northern Virginia Jewish community. This commitment has indeed been integral to the success of our efforts on behalf of JTS for these last eight years."
