Son of Lewis Porter, cabinet maker and merchant, and Sarah Hockenhull, of Astbury parish. Married Emma Susan Crick on 26 Mar 1857 in Astbury and worked with her father, a noted boot maker, before leaving England and eventually enlisting in the Union Army in the American Civil War (pvt., Co. E., 10th Massachusetts, infantry, 1861-1864). Reunited with wife after the war. Eleven known children (5 survived to adulthood). Wife received veteran's survivor pension until her second marriage.
