“HENRY WILLEY, SANTA CRUZ PIONEER BUSINESS MAN, DIES

Monday, April 2, marked the passing in Monterey of Henry Willey, who until recently was a resident of Santa Cruz for more than fifty years, and a man closely identified with the business life of the city.

Born in Goffstown, N.H., the son of a clergyman, he prepared at Philips Exeter academy for Dartmouth. This course, however, had to be abandoned for a shorter approach to self support.

Mr. Willey came to Santa Cruz in 1876 to make her [his] home with the family of his uncle, Dr. S. H. Willey, and from that time until two years ago, had been identified with the civic and business life of this city.

He was the first president of what is now the Farmers and Merchants National bank, and he headed several municipal organizations besides, founding the Henry Willey company. He always gladly aided in the support of charitable and business organizations.

Mr. Willey, with his wife, has been in Monterey during the past year to be near a married daughter and their grand-children. He has been ill for more than a year but until a few days ago hopes were held for his recovery.

Mr. Willey was always a strong advocate of cremation and in accordance with his own urgent request the funeral was held at the California chapel [now Chapel of the Chimes], Oakland, for the family only.” END
