Helen was born May 17, 1915, near Brainerd, Minnesota. She was the daughter of James and Alice Dowling. She graduated from Crosby-Ironton High School and attended Cedar Rapids Business College in Iowa. On October 15, 1946, she married Raymond Hammer of Alexandria where they made their home until April of 1957 when they moved to Osakis and bought a resort. Raymond died a short time later and she continued to operate the resort until 1964. Helen returned to Alexandria and was employed as a bookkeeper until her retirement. She was active in her church and volunteer work.
Mrs. Hammer died June 13, 1996 at the Bethany Home. She is survived by her son, Michael and daughter-in-law Ann; two grandchildren; brother, James; and sisters: Jeanne and Lois. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond; parents, brothers: Martin and Allen; and sisters: Marcella, Carol, Eileen, Patricia and Marian.
Mass of Christian Burial was held June 17, 1996 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Al Ludwig officiating. Interment was at St. Mary's Cemetery. Services directed by Petermeier's Alexandria Funeral Home.
