Civil War veteran - 1st Lt Co. I 117th. New York Infantry - 1862-1864.
Severely wounded by an unexploded shell which hit him in the leg at Cold Harbor Va. 15 June 1864.
Discharged for wounds 17 December 1864.
Brevetted Captain U.S.V for 'Gallant and Meritorious Conduct'.
One of six brothers of the Miller family to serve in the Civil War.
After service, worked in the Pension Department at Washington D.C.
Was killed when the old Ford building, which held the Pension Department in Washington, collapsed on the 9th. June 1893.
Benjamin was unmarried.
His body was sent back to Utica for burial.
