Levi Clemens, Old and Respected Citizen, Passes Away Saturday Morning

Was Past Four Score Years of Age.
Funeral Held This Afternoon at Home of His Adopted Daughter Mrs. E. G. Wentworth


Levi Clemens, aged 80 years and 8 months, died Saturday evening at 5:05 o'clock at the home of his adopted daughter, Mrs. E. G. Wentworth. 421 North Eighteenth street from diseases incident to old age. Funeral services were held from the Wentworth home this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and the remains were interred at Oakland cemetery by the side of his wife who died February 28, 1900. Dr. W. P. Stoddard of the First M. E. church, conducted the religious services and the Masonic and K. of P. lodges had charge of the funeral.

Mr. Clemens had lived in this county and city many years a respected and useful life and hail interested himself in matters pertaining to the best welfare of the public until the infirmities of life compelled a less active life. He was a devout Christian, a longtime member of the M. E. church, and was one of the strong and faithful members of the Independent Order of Good Templars when that renowned temperance organization was in active existence here. He also held a membership in Centerville lodge, No. 76., I.O.O.F. and Encampment Centerville, Lodge No. 64, Knights of Pythias and Jackson Lodge No. 42., A.F.& A.M., having attained the commandary rank in the last named order.

Deceased was born at Lebanon, Pa. on February 8, 1821, being the eldest of ten children born to Mr. and Mrs. John Clemens. All of this family are now dead except Jacob Clemens who resides at Boise City, Idaho; Mrs. Sabina Ewing, of Ewing, Neb.; Mrs. Leah Gulillani, also of Nebraska and Mrs. Lizzie Replogle, of Kansas. When Mr. Clemens was still an Infant his parents moved to Montgomery county, Ohio, and later to Wayne county, Indiana. At the age of 15 Mr. Clemens started out to make his own way in the world and the first two years were spent as a woodchopper. Then he began the work of butcher, at which he was occupied for 11 years. He was married to Miss Leah Switger, of Wayne comity, Ind. and in the spring of 1852 came to Iowa, locating in Bellair township, Appanoose county, where he engaged in the farming and butcher business. He moved to Centerville in 1876 and opened a meat market on the north side of the square. This market he conducted until the Keystone hotel fire when his shop was burned and he never re-entered business. Since that time he looked after private matters until the death of his wife. Ever since that time he has made his home with his adopted daughter, Mrs. E. G. Wentworth whose former name was Arthelia Wertz. She was his only child, his natural children dying in Infancy.
