Emanuel Correia was born in Maderia; son of Francisco Correia and Maria de Jesus. Immigrated to Hawaii, was a foreman for Spreckles Sugar Plantation. Married Christina Goncalves in Hilo, Hawaii in 1888. They settled in Blyn, Washington, where he fathered 12 children and worked in various factories while the family lived on a farm. He was a restless, high-tempered and unhappy man who left his family in 1913 and moved to the East Coast, where he married his second wife, Della, and fathered eight more children. For a time he lived in Cuba, and he may have been in Brazil. The family also lived in New Jersey and finally in Richmond, Virginia, where he tended a farm until his death at age 87.
