Mrs. Cowden was a seamstress and dressmaker from Great Britain. After moving to St. Joseph in 1948, she worked in alterations at the former Nash-Rhodes Department Store.
She was born Aug. 14, 1896, in Great Codington, Great Britain. In 1922, she married Frederick C. Laurence. He died in 1956. In 1985, she married Thomas Cowden. He died in 1990.
Mrs. Cowden also was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Frayer; and her parents, Horace and Sarah J. Crawley.
Surviving: five grandchildren, including Sarah Kanaly, Hiawatha, who cared for her; and numerous great and great-great grandchildren.
Graveside Service and burial: Feb. 1, 2000 at Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph, Mo.
