He was born Nov. 7, 1917, to John and Mary (Sagen) Skalko in Sparta. He married Lila Irene Lundgren on June 26, 1943, in Mountain Iron. Matt was employed for 38 years with U.S. Steel as a truck driver, retiring on Dec. 31, 1980. He enjoyed gardening and working on his woodpile. He loved sports, especially hockey. In 1953, he started the hockey program in Mountain iron, which he headed for 15 years. Matt enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren, great-grandchild and his many friends. He was an active member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church.
Survivors include a son, Gary (Claudia) Skalko; two grandsons, Derek Skalko, and Justin Skalko; a great-grandson, Collin Moe; a foster granddaughter, Pamela Strey; a foster great-grandson, Christian Culligan; a sister, Ellen (John) Drobnick; six brothers: Mike (Frances), Daniel (Frances), Steve, William, John (Laverne) and Edward (Marion); a sister-in-law, Janet Skalko; a brother-in-law, Stanley Bezek; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lila; son, Thomas Matthew Skalko; brother, Frank Skalko; and three sisters, Ann Granroth, Julia Bezek, and Eva Holmes.
