Graveside service with United States Army military honors for James Emmit "Son" Giles, 80, of Gainesville is set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the McAlister Cemetery in rural Carter County, near Overbrook, Okla., with Rev. Floyd Flowers officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home.

Mr. Giles died Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Dallas.

He was born April 12, 1926, in Marietta, Okla., to Emmit and Jewel Howard Giles. On Oct. 19, 1954, he married Betty Jane Murphy in Yuma, Ariz. He was a resident of Gainesville for the past 23 years. He served in the United States Army for 6 years and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. A chef, he retired after 29 years. He was of the Pentecostal faith and enjoyed fishing, baseball, boxing and hunting.

Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Linda Giles of Pomona, Calif., Terry and Caren Giles of Newalla, Okla., and James A. and Mickey Giles of Gainesville; daughters and son-in-law, Jan and Grumpy Nettles of Niceville, Fla., and Kathy Franks of Gainesville; sisters and brother-in-law, Lou and George Reed and Jessie Southerland, all of Gainesville; 20 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jane Murphy Giles on Nov. 29, 1990; parents; brother, William C. "Bud" Giles on Oct. 22, 2005; and sister, Ruth Shipman on Dec. 31, 2003.

Visitation will be at the Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home from noon to 9 p.m. today.
