Rev. Robert F. Cooney, CSV, priest of the Viatorian Community, passed away Friday, Dec. 12, 2014, at the age of 87. He was born in Springfield, Ill., the son of the late William and Florence Fitzpatrick Cooney. His brothers, Bernard, William, John and Joseph; and his sister, Sr. William Bernard, O.P. preceded him in death. Fr. Cooney pronounced his first vows with the Clerics of St. Viator in 1951, his final vows in 1954 and he was ordained a priest in 1957. He taught at Spalding Institute, Peoria, Ill. (1951-1953), St. James Trade School, Springfield (1953) and Alleman High School, Rock Island, Ill. (1959-1961). From 1961 until 1971, he was a teacher and librarian at Saint Viator High School, Arlington Heights, Ill. At Bishop Gorman High School, Las Vegas, he was librarian from 1971 to 1973 and from 1973 to 1977, he served as associate pastor at St. Viator Church, Chicago. He was chaplain at St. John's Hospital, Springfield (1977-1981) and St. Mary's Hospital, Kankakee, Ill. (1981-1986). He was parochial vicar at Maternity BVM Church, Bourbonnais, Ill. (1986-1990) and at Guardian Angel Cathedral, Las Vegas (1990-1996). Visitation will be 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, with Mass of Christian burial following, both at the Viatorian Province Center. Burial will be at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, Ill.
