MASON CITY - Gwendolyn Murphy, 95, of Mason City, Iowa, died Thursday Dec. 11, 2014, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday Dec. 16, 2014, at Epiphany Parish St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 5th St. SE, Mason City, with the Rev. Neil Manternach and the Rev. Kenneth Gehling officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa.
Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. with a rosary at 4 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 6 p.m. at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, Mason City, Iowa.
Gwen was born August 21, 1919, in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Donald E. and Evaline (Ellis) Keat. She grew up in the Britt-Garner area and graduated from Garner High School in 1938. She attended Waldorf College and then attended St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing and graduated in 1941. She worked for Mercy Hospital as a nurse for over 38 years, retiring in 1981.
She married Francis Murphy Nov. 23, 1943, at the St. James Catholic Church, Forest City, Iowa. They lived on a farm in the Marble Rock, Rockwell and Dougherty areas until they moved to Mason City in 1950s.
She was a member of Epiphany Parish St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City, St. Francis Circle and Mercy Alumni Class of 1941.
She is survived by her eight children, Margaret (John) Cuva, Madison, Wisconsin, Mary Sturges, Rockwell, Iowa, John (Mary Lou) Murphy, Mason City, Iowa, Kathleen Secks, St. Louis, Missouri, Michael (Candice) Murphy, Hudson, Wisconsin, Cecelia Omundson, Hopkinsville, Kentucky, Donald (Laurie) Murphy, Mason City, Iowa and David (Shell) Murphy, Storm Lake, Iowa; ten grandchildren, Gina Cuva, Scott Sturges, Shane Sturges, Mark Murphy, Robert Murphy, Bridget Murphy, Chris Murphy, Shaun Omundson, Heather Murphy and Erin Murphy; and eleven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Frank; one grandson Keaton Murphy; one granddaughter Sheila Omundson; and a son-in-law, Howard Secks.
