Katherine grew up in East Haven, was a graduate of Cross High School in New Haven, and an active member of Christ Church in East Haven in her younger years. Katherine cared for her mother during her battle with Parkinson's and became a surrogate mother for her late brother, Robert Henry Frey. She met her husband Andrew while working at Union and New Haven Trust Company and was married in June of 1940. Katherine gave birth to her son Andrew Jr. in 1944 and later her daughter Barbara H. She was active within the lives of her children, teaching Sunday School at Trinity Episcopal Church in New Haven and participating as den mother in the Cub and Girl Scouts.
