Phineas lived at Caldwell (Warren Co.) NH and in his 61st yr. of age when he applied for a pension 6 April 1818. (testimony dated 8 May 1821): "I reside on. farm containing 60 acres of land in Caldwell with a log house and frame barn on it. The land was formerly mine but was sold in March last by the Sheriff of the County of Warren by virtue of an execution against me on a judgment, about the 1st of Jan. last for $100.50 damages and costs. The farm was sold at vendue. By the laws of the state I have a right to redeem the farm by paying the encumbrances before. the 10 June 1822, but this is not now in my power to do, nor do I have any expectation of redeeming it. I have the use of the farm for this season, which as I am not able to work it, and must therefore hire it out at a value of $25. I have one cow which I rented for 3 yrs. She is not mine. (There is a great inventory of his personal possessions in this pension application for those who are interested, amounting to $115.27). "My family: my wife who is 63 yrs. old, in very poor health, troubled with the asthma and rheumatism and unable to labor but little. My son Samuel is 23 yrs. old. He lives with me at present since he became of age I have paid him for his services up to now and he has taken the farm above mentioned for this year. He works on shares and is not able to assist me except by his manual labor. My daughter Harriet is 19 yrs. old. She lives with me and always has been in feeble health. My eldest daughter is 37 yrs. old, is married and has 5 children. Her husband has left her and she now makes her home with me with their children: a girl about 8 yrs.. They are in no situation to assist me. My other children all reside away from me. I was born in Rutland in Massachusetts and I am now in my 64th yr. My health has been quite poor or a number of years and I can labor but very little. I was troubled with a very bad breach in my body and I am by occupation a cooper. —He signed his own name. when he was a pensioner in Warren Co. New York serving from Feb. 1777 - 31 March 1782.
