Here is what the Courier-Journal says, in part, while referring to his death, which took place last Thursday night: "Eckstein Norton, for four years president of the Louisville & Nashville railroad, died last night of heart failure at his home, on Staten Island. He was a brother of Geo. W. and W. F. Norton, of this city, but had lived in New York since 1864. He was one of the ablest financiers Kentucky has ever sent to the metropolis.... He entered the directory of the Louisville & Nashville railroad in 1884, and his services in establishing its finances secured him the presidency in 1886. He declined a re-election to the presidency of the road in 1891.... Though Mr. Norton gave up the Louisville & Nashville's presidency two years ago, he still retained a place in the directory. He early invested largely in Texas and Western lands, which yielded him great profits.
At the time of his death, or quiet recently, Mr. Norton was a director in the Mechanic's National Bank, the Bank of the State of New York, and the First National Bank of Staten Island. He had retired to a large extent from business, in order to devote more leisure to his family. Mr. Norton belonged to the Dutch Reformed Church in New York.... The news of the death of Mr. Norton caused expressions of regret all through the Louisville & Nashville general offices. The officials and clerks all had a kind word for the deceased. There were a great many with whom he had personal acquaintance. President Smith, First Vice President Knott and Traffic Manager Van der Berg are all in New York, where they have been attending a meeting of the Southern Railway and Steamship Association at the Fifth Avenue Hotel. It is probable that these gentlemen will remain in New York and accompany Mr. Norton's remains to Kentucky.
