Emil was born in Gamlakarleby (Swedish for Kokkola) Finland and came to America before 1899. He went by Emil Burke throughout his life in America although he was born Anders Emil Andersson Hällis. He believed that the surname Hällis sounded too much like "Hell" so he took his mother's name Björk, Americanized to Burke.
