Born in Marblehead, Ohio, his parents were Conrad & Rose (Leitner) Hess, they were German and Austrian born immigrants respectively . He married Amanda Louisa Grill on 12/24/1903 in Ottawa County Ohio. Conrad originally had migrated to Arizona in 1896 where he worked as a medical intern at the old Congress, AZ Mine hospital. He left the mine and went back to Ohio sometime around 1902. After his marriage in 1903 he returned to Arizona with his bride and became a licensed pharmacist where he then acquired a pharmacy in Holbrook,AZ in 1906. Around 1909 he sold the pharmacy and went into the sheep business. He acquired a 58 acre homestead in the Phoenix Park area southeast of Heber, AZ where he raised sheep. The homestead was later acquired by the Blevins family. In 1918 he purchased a 320 acre parcel of land in North Phoenix where he grew Alfalfa and Pima Cotton. The Ranch House was originally located on the southeast corner of 27th Ave and Northern. In 1936 Conrad was appointed the State Sheep Inspector of Arizona by then Governor R. C. Stanford, as an inspector he and his wife traveled to many rural locations throughout northern Arizona. He was appointed the Navajo County Recorder on 9-1-1909 and he also ran for the Navajo County State Senate in 1918 losing to William A. Parr by a close margin (The Holbrook News 11/22/1918 Vol. 10 No. 31 page 3). Conrad died of heart failure in 1941 on Railroad Avenue in Ashfork, AZ near the old train station.
