"CHARLES BALES TAKES OWN LIFE AT FARM HOME
"Gunshot Wounds Fatal To Prominent Brandywine Twp. Man; Funeral Wednesday
"Self-inflicted gunshot wounds caused the death of Charles Bales, prominent Brandywine Township retired farmer and native of Shelby County.

"Mr. Bales, who was 77 years of age and had been in failing health for some time, was found dead at the rear of his home about 5:00 o'clock this morning by his wife, who went to the home of a neighbor, Walter Ray, after finding her husband's body. Mr. Ray returned to the Bales residence with Mrs. Bales, whereupon Dr. C.J. Price, county coroner was called.

"Members of the Bales family said the elderly man had been suffering from cancer of the jaw and had apparently become despondent over the state of his health. It was determined that Mr. Bales had shot himself twice with a .12 guage shotgun. Coroner Price said the first shot apparently had merely torn away a part of his clothing but that the second blast from the gun had entered the region of his abdomen. According to the report, Mr. and Mrs. Bales had retired early last night and Mrs. Bales was awakened about 1:00 o'clock this morning by the shots. She believed, however, someone was firing a gun in the vicinity of the Brandywine bridge, near the home, as had happened on previous occasions.

"The tragedy was the second of its kind to occur in the same vicinity within the past three days. Samuel O. Porterfield, 74, died at the Major hospital on Friday night as the result of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"Mr. Bales was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Bales, and was born in Sugar Creek township on February 20, 1869. He had spent his entire life in this county and had engaged in farming until his retirement several years ago due to failing health. He was married to Maggie Lawrence in November, 1893, and to this union three sons were born, two of whom survive with the widow. One son, Albert, died from drowning when he was 15 years of age. The surviving sons are Frank, of Shelbyville, and William, of Boggstown. Mr. Bales also leaves several nieces and nephews.

"Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock in the C.F. Fix & Son mortuary, with the Rev. Clarence Hager, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be on the family lot in the Boggstown Cemetery. Friends may call at the Fix mortuary."
